  • The Shrimp Festival in Fort Myers Beach!

After an intense weekend of Shrimp Festival in Fort Myers Beach and deliveries to our customers, today Beach Baby Rentals is exactly 3 months old!  Our business has grown steadily since the inception date of December 11, 2013.  After a sluggish start over the holidays (and some sleepless nights as I worried about what in the heck we were going to do with all this new baby equipment if we didn't start getting more business), our reservations volume spiked on January 2 and has not subsided since.  We're pleased to be doing business in the Ft. Myers-Sanibel area and love being a small but important part of the lovely community of Ft. Myers Beach!

20140308_112927Kathryn and I were able to arrange our delivery schedule this past Saturday to make time for the Shrimp Festival Parade.  What a fantastic time that was.  After an amazing breakfast of Shrimp and Grits prepared by Dan and Tree Andre at their lovely Mango Street Inn, we joined friends and strangers along the parade route for a raucous, positive, community-centered event.  As I observed the celebration and felt the warm spirit of this little island town, I thought to myself - this place reminds me of the perfect combination of Mayberry and Key West!  20140308_112217Mayberry for that small town feel, where the locals all know each other and the visitors are embraced with welcoming arms.  And Key West for, well, you know.  This town knows how to throw a party!

In the meantime, of course, the guests keep arriving and we keep on growing!  We added a new van to our delivery fleet that will be sporting a new wrap later this week that will make our presence on Estero Island much more visible. We also had a very complimentary letter to the editor printed in the Island Sandpaper last week, which of course made us at Beach Baby Rentals very happy.  The letter echoed what we've strived to do with this business - establish it as the premier baby gear rental company in the area that offers an enhanced level of service and quality that will warm the heart of all the parents and grandparents caring for and enjoying the presence of their little beach babies while visiting this great destination!

We've added a customer review page to our website to capture some of the feedback we get from customers.  We also have a Yelp! page for customers to provide uncensored feedback on our business practices.  Of course it is always risky to solicit feedback from customers but we feel good about how we are building this business and how we are treating our customers.  Most importantly, we feel good about the quality of service and product we are providing, and we hope you do too!

  • Beach Baby Rentals Update on Graco Recall

As we previously discussed in a blog, Graco announced a massive recall of car seats in early February due to a faulty buckle.  We immediately pulled all Graco seats from active inventory while we determined our best course of action, and we switched entirely to the Britax Marathon seat as a replacement for the Graco inventory.

Graco 3-in-1 car seatWe are now happy to report that Graco has certified that our Graco car seats purchased in December 2013 and January 2014 were not subject to the recall because they were manufactured after Graco switched to the new, safe buckle.  This buckle is the same buckle used in the Britax car seats.

Britax MarathonGoing forward, our customers will have an opportunity to choose between the Britax and the Graco seats.  While the Britax is a more expensive seat and thus rents for a higher amount, some parents really like the design of the Graco seats, especially for larger babies or older toddlers.  So the choice is yours - they are both great seats!

  • The Stork Brought the New Baby!

    Endangered Endangered

We have been spotting  the Wood Stork as we deliver of our  excellent baby gear.   Many of us grew up hearing that Storks delivered the new baby brother or sister.  We began  wondering how that tale came about? So we googled it ! Here are a few of the  reasons behind the bird-baby mythology according to  Amelia Glynn's blog:

In may cultures, storks represent fertility, springtime and good luck. In Roman times, if a stork built a nest on your roof, it was seen as a blessing and a promise of never-ending love from Venus.

stork___baby_1400x469Aristotle went as far as to make killing storks a crime. Some believed that a stork could cause a woman to become pregnant just by looking at her!  Storks are considered a harbinger of good fortune.  In Germany, they are known as "adebar", meaning "luck-bringer.

Wood Storks, an endangered bird are nesting  in the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary for the first time since 2009, the Florida sanctuary they had abandoned several years ago.   Officials say storks have built about 160 nests so far at four locations in the sanctuary. Sanctuary resource manager Mike Knight stated  that the number of nests may double or triple because the birds don't all start nesting at the same time.

The sanctuary once was the largest wood stork breeding colony in North America. The birds were forced to find other places to nest as their shallow wetland habitat declined.

Sanctuary officials say heavy rains during Florida's wet season helped improve conditions this year, but one good nesting season doesn't indicate a complete recovery.

The Storks have a special place in our hearts at Beach Baby Rentals, because we LOVE babies and we love watching the beautiful birds soaring over the Ft. Myers area!  So we will continue to support the efforts to protect the wetlands of Florida and hope you do too.
